The More Leadership Involvement, the Better

Another warning sign that it’s time for me to run is when leaders are absent from a change effort. Yes, they may loudly proclaim, in word and writing, about the change that needs to happen. They may even resource the effort and ask for regular updates. But that is not all of what is needed.

Leaders need to show up in visible and tangible ways. Actions speak louder than words.

  • Being attentive says “This is important.”
  • Being engaged says “I’m in this with you.”
  • Leading the way says “I am going first.”

I’ve worked with many great change leaders, who:

  • Participate in regular reviews about the effort
  • Ask good questions
  • Model the change that is desired
  • Find opportunities to speak in a positive way about the change
  • Find and celebrate quick wins
  • Ask what support is needed – and find a way to provide it
  • Appreciate effort in the right direction – even feeble first attempts
  • Communicate, communicate, communicate
  • Hold folks accountable, and most of all themselves
  • Sustain the focus for longer than it seems necessary, for they know that slipping back is an ever present danger
