Reflection

As a celebration to the amazing group of coaches in our practice, I am dedicating this month’s blog posts & newsletter to coaching. I’ve learned the value of coaching from personal experience – and am intentional about having coaches support me in my business and personal growth. I’ve seen the difference great coaching can make – in both personal and organizational performance.

I encourage you to subscribe to our blog & newsletter – and also to consider if one of our coaches might be just the thing you need to take your performance to the next level.

I am a lifelong learner, but a relative “newbie” to one of the most powerful learning techniques we have. As a high energy, quick to take action, have a lot to do, type of person, I rushed headlong into the day, tackled it with great intensity until I fell exhausted into bed at night, only to repeat the same pattern over and over. There was no down time, no quiet time, and certainly no time for reflection.

Several wise teachers instilled in me the habit of reflection. I now take time at the end of the day to review the day, tally a list of what I am grateful for and distill the learnings presented to me. My ritual at the beginning of the day is to begin with quiet time, in which I set intentions for the day and reflect more deeply through writing.

I’ve been repeating this pattern of reflection for the past 8 years – and experiencing these outcomes:

  • Sharper focus
  • Clarity on what really matters
  • Ability to resolve tough situations better and faster
  • Keener insight into situations and solutions
  • Richer and deeper learning
  • Inner calmness

Coaching, by design, encourages reflection. It forces you to slow down, think, ponder, reflect, synthesize, focus and plan. For those who have lives that are fast paced, coaching can provide the gift of slowing down and reflecting. It is the gift that keeps on giving.
