The Importance of Renewal

Summer has arrived. Days are longer. Vacations are imminent. Pools are open. Meals are served on the deck. Things feel more informal and relaxed. This month brings reflections on the importance of renewal for leaders – and how you might find ways to renew yourself in addition to that summer vacation.

Renewal is especially important for leaders today. Work demands are higher. Leaders feel constantly “on the job” due to email, cellphones, texting and instant messaging. Resources are constrained yet the need to get more done is greater.

It is just because everything is moving faster that leaders need to find time to slow down. Establishing a lifestyle that includes regular actions that allow for renewal is a key to higher performance. Without ways to change pace, renew, and reflect – we begin to spin out of control. We are less productive, less creative, less focused, and have less fun.

So with this change of seasons, think about what you might do that enables you to do more by taking time to do less.
